We use buckets too! Sharpened and Please Sharpen. One of my classroom jobs is pencil sharpener so we always have sharpened pencils. The worst thing ever is to get started on something after you get the kiddos all settled down, and hear, “but I don’t have a pencil!” LOL!

Here’s what I did last year: I had almost the same set-up with my pencils that you have! A student collected all pencils from pencil cups every afternoon and sharpened them. They were placed in the Ready bucket. Each morning students grabbed two fresh pencils and used them all day. If a new pencil was needed during the day the student gave back a bad one and got a fresh one. This worked very well! It totally eliminated kids sharpening pencils constantly. A bonus was that we did not argue over pencils as no one had their own. They were all shared! This year I became the STEM Lab teacher and just put a cup of pencils on each lab table every morning.

Ug!! We totally had a 20 minutes discussion about pencils at our last staff meeting! We are going to move from community pencils to keep track of your pencils. Hopefully, this way most of the kids will take care of them and not leave them on the floor or wherever they end up. I swear that the kids eat them!
