We focused on external traits- ones you can SEE on the outside, and internal traits- made up of thoughts, feelings, actions, and dialogue. To help us remember internal traits, we used memory motions. For thoughts we touched our heads, feelings we touched our hearts, actions, we moved our arms like we were running, and dialogue, we made a talking motion with our hands in front of our mouths. 🙂 (Just a side note, my kids were using the work “dialogue” all week long. <3 it!)

I wanted to share the internal and external character trait anchor charts we created as a class.

Here is our first one for A Bad Case of the Stripes.

The next day was Amelia Bedelia, but I was testing my kids Fountas and Pinnell reading levels, so I had a sub. I wasn’t able to take a picture of the chart.

Wednesday we read Superdog: The Heart of a Hero. This was by FAR my students favorite book.

Thursday we read Tacky the Penguin. I LOVE Tacky! It is perfect for character traits, and teaches a great lesson about being yourself.

On Friday, we read a classic: The Three Little Pigs and compared all 4 characters.

Then it was time for the rubber to meet the road. I had each of my lovelies pick a fiction book from their D5 book box, and tell me about their character’s traits.

They did SUCH a fantastic job. Here are just a few of them.

Character Student 1

This student read The Night I Followed the Dog. It’s a fantastic book. My kiddos have all been passing it around. 🙂

Character Student 2

This student read Froggy Plays T-Ball.

Character Student 3

This student read The Amazing SpongeBobini. SpongeBob is always a big hit. 🙂

I was so proud of my kiddos. They really were able to find those difficult internal traits by looking at their character’s thoughts, feelings, actions, and dialogue.

This week we’re going to be working on setting- time, place, and environment, so keep an eye out for a post on how it goes!

Have a fantastic week!
