Talking about PLOT!

Hi All!

I hope you’re having a lovely week! I have to admit that I’ve been a bit of a blogging slacker. My usual goal is to post 2-3 times a week, but with my longer commute this year, some weeks that’s just not happening.

Anyway, I wanted to let you take a peek into my classroom to see how we finished up out story element unit!

I’ve already shared how I taught character {here} and {here}.

I also posted about teaching setting {here}.

Freebies included in both posts above, so make sure to check them out!

Last week we focused on understanding and retelling the plot of a story.

Here’s the anchor chart I made. I got the roller coaster idea from the fabulous Amy Lemons!

Plot Anchor Chart

I really wanted my students to understand that plot is everything that happens.

We used our {retelling rope} to retell, and I made a paper version to tape on the back of their book boxes (I will have to remember to take a picture and post it).

Here are the read alouds I used each day to practice retelling the plot.

(It was a 4 day week.)

There was An Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Leaves

This is great for just focusing on sequence. I have a super easy sequencing activity that we used in my store {here}.

If You Give a Pig a Pancake

This book is SO fun, a great way to practice retelling a plot, and a great reminder that books can have multiple problems and solutions.

Stellaluna

I LOVE Stellaluna for about 1000 reasons. The main reasons are that it has a very clear plot, it teaches great lessons, and the illustrations are fantastic.

I’m sure you’ve seen the upside down plot bats on pinterest for Stellaluna. We made those. Did I remember to take pictures? Of course not! They were very cute though!

The Day Jimmy’s Boa Ate the Wash

I LOVE this book, but it’s pretty complicated. It was a little tough for some of my kids to follow, but it’s still a great book to teach plot, especially if you want to challenge your students.

That was my week on plot! This week we’re focusing on pumpkins and main idea. We also are working on repeated addition and arrays, so stop back this weekend to see what we did!

Have a great rest of your week!
