In my classroom, I organize my classroom library by IB learner profile characteristic. You can read all about how I organize it here. This makes it easier for me to find books to focus on different learner profile attributes. It also helps students keep the learner profile in mind. Here are 7 excellent books for the IB learner profile trait of being open-minded.

Favorite books for teaching students to be knowledgeable

What If You Had Animal Parts: this series is always a student favorite. Each book in the series teaches about an animal body part- teeth, hair ears- through the lens of children imagining if THEY had that body part. This silly series is very well done and will keep your students engaged and learning!

The Math Counts Series of books are such an excellent series for exploring a variety of math concepts. There are books for patterns, sorting, shapes, measurement, numbers and more.

Another series of excellent math focused books are the MathStart Series by Stuart J Murphy. These fun and creative books use interesting and fun child friendly story lines to explain a variety of math concepts.

The Step Into Reading non-fiction books are also a favorite. Although the “levels” aren’t always super helpful, in general, I find they are interesting, kind friendly, informative and relatively inexpensive books to add to my knowledgeable book collection.

National Geographic Little Kids First Big Books are also a favorite for my knowledgeable baskets. These books always have a great amount of information, bright and interesting pictures, and are a student favortie.

Any book by Gail Gibbons is always a favorite in my classroom. I love how in-depth her writing is. It’s the perfect amount for my students. The illustrations in her books are also eye catching and informative.

As I said before, any nonfiction or informational book is a great fit for a knowledgeable library basket.
